New York State Wins 'Race to the Top' Federal Funding;
General Brown Waits For Word on How Local School Districts Will Benefit

WASHINGTON - New York is among the winners in the Obama administration's Race to the Top program, guaranteeing millions of dollars in new education grants for the state, New York City newspapers reported on Tuesday.

General Brown will wait for news on how the money will be used to help local school districts, said Superintendent Stephan Vigliotti.

The Department of Education will officially announce the awards in Washington later today, according to the New York Times and New York Daily News. New York had previously been announced as one of 16 finalists for more than $4 billion in federal cash and can win up to $700 million.
