Superintendent Case updates community on reopening plans

  • On Friday, July 10, General Brown School District Superintendent Barbara Case sent the following email to families in the district regarding the timeline for decisions and planning for reopening school in the fall:

    Dear School Community Members,

I do hope this message finds you all well and able to enjoy this hot, SUMMER weather as of late!

I’m sure many families heard Governor Cuomo’s announcement on Wednesday regarding the reopening of schools in New York State. While I don’t have a great deal of specific answers right now regarding scheduling, social distancing, and maintaining the required safety precautions to ensure the well-being of all students and staff when we return to school, I wanted to assure families that the General Brown Central School District Leadership Team has been following and reading the many reopening plans of other states, as well as guidance from the CDC, American Pediatrics Association, and countless other resources as we consider ideas for our own reopening plan.

Based on information provided by the Governor, we anticipate guidance from him on Monday, July 13, 2020. We anticipate that guidance will deal with Health and Safety. Additionally, the Board of Regents is scheduled to meet July 13-14, 2020, and we are expected to receive guidance on NYSED policies and instructional guidance soon thereafter. The Superintendents of the Jefferson-Lewis BOCES have been meeting regularly to gather information, so that we have somewhat of a regional approach as we move forward making our individual school plans. We have identified guiding ideas; however, until we know the expectations set forth by the Governor and NYSED, we can’t customize those ideas to meet our own district’s needs.

The General Brown CSD Leadership Team will be meeting with various members of school staff next week to gather feedback, so that we can consider that information as we develop our own plan. Additionally, after we meet with staff, we will be sending a survey out to parents and guardians, so that you, too, can have an opportunity to provide us with valuable input. We are confident that with collaboration, we can make the best plan by bringing ideas from many perspectives, especially because everyone, collectively, played pivotal roles to carry out our services throughout the closure last school year.

We do believe that we will be asked to create a plan for three scenarios:

    1. Return full time in the school buildings
    2. Hybrid model of partial learning in schools and partial online learning
    3. All online learning

All evidence is that the plans will need to be submitted by July 31, 2020. The Governor also indicated that he would make a decision about the reopening of schools across New York State sometime during the first week of August.

I will keep you updated as more information is available, but in the meantime, please feel free to call (315) 779-2300 or email with any questions or if you would like to further discuss our reopening plan.

    Thank you, and stay well,
    Barbara J. Case
    Superintendent of Schools
