Interim principal named at Junior/Senior High School

  • Veteran administrator Karen Denny has been named interim principal of the General Brown Junior/Senior High School and began working in the role this past week.

Denny served as a principal for South Jefferson High School for 14 years, retiring in 2018. Since that time, she has worked as an interim principal for two schools in the Carthage Central School District.

Prior to being a principal, Denny was a guidance counselor in the Sackets Harbor and General Brown school districts.

“We are pleased to welcome Mrs. Denny back to the General Brown community in this role. Her experience and collaborative approach are a welcomed addition to the Junior/Senior High School, especially during these challenging times,” Superintendent Barbara Case said.

Denny said that while leading a school during a pandemic is a new experience, she is embracing the challenge. “This is a new opportunity for me to learn and grow, and I hope I can bring a calmness,” she said.

Denny said her priority is putting students first, and she is a firm believer in teamwork and collaboration. She also is focused on being available to those in the school community. “I believe in open, honest and direct communication,” she said.

She admits making connections with students is more difficult with the hybrid schedule because she doesn’t see them every day. However, Denny is already finding familiarity at General Brown, reconnecting with former colleagues and former students who are now adults.

Denny earned her bachelor’s degree in health education from SUNY Cortland and her master’s degrees in school counseling and education administration and school counseling from SUNY Oswego. She is a Jefferson County native who endeavors to embrace the outdoor activities all four seasons have to offer. She and her husband have three adult daughters and a foster son.

Denny will remain in the position until June 30, 2021, as the district seeks a permanent replacement for Nicole Donaldson, who recently resigned as the JSHS principal.
