Student recognized for kindness campaign at Dexter
General Brown eighth-grader Destiny Gist is being recognized for the “Spread the Kindness” campaign she initiated at Dexter Elementary School as part of a community service project through her Girl Scout troop.
While she was a student at Dexter, Destiny painted positive messages on rocks and hung inspiring and kind messages on posters throughout the school. She also started a kindness tree in the main hallway and invited students to post their own positive messages on it.
Destiny’s efforts were part of her participation in the Sackets Harbor Girl Scout Troop’s “Cultivating Kindness” project. The troop held a kindness walk and carnival, painted rocks and made displays at the Sackets Harbor village office and bank.
Destiny had to complete 50 hours of community service along with the rest of her troop to achieve the Silver Award. Principal Dave Ramie recently presented Destiny with a Certificate of Appreciation from Dexter Elementary thanking her for involving the school in her project.
In the near future, the Girl Scout Council will present the Sackets Harbor Troop the Silver Award, along with congratulatory messages from the New York State Assembly and Senate.
