Families encouraged to apply for free or reduced-price meals

Aug. 31, 2022

It's more than a meal application. School meal applications benefit school and families. Apply today!
  • For the past two years, General Brown Central School District has had the opportunity to offer free meals for all its students. This was supported by a waiver from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). However, this waiver has expired and is no longer available for the 2022-23 school year.

Families are highly encouraged to apply for free and reduced-price meals for the 2022-23 school year. In addition to potentially being eligible for reduced-price meals, you may also qualify for benefits like reduced college testing. It could also provide essential funding to General Brown Central School District.

You should be aware that this application process needs to be completed each year. Any prior qualification will only roll over into the following school year for 30 days. After that, a new application must be completed and submitted.

    School Meals FAQ

    • Will there be meals "free/no charge" for all students for the 2022-23 school year?

      • Unfortunately, no. USDA provided additional funding for school districts nationwide during the COVID-19 pandemic, allowing all students to access breakfast and lunch at no charge. These waivers and additional funding are not available for the 2022-23 school year.

      • To cover the cost of providing meals to students, the district will resume charging for students who do not qualify for free or reduced-price meals.

      • Students who qualify for free or reduced-price meals can eat breakfast and/or lunch at no cost.

    • How much will meals cost if my student does not have meal benefits?
